I am glad to announce a brand new free WordPress theme called “Urbane”.

urbane

This is a crisp rounded theme that comes with lots of features like built in drop-down menus, Feedburner settings (RSS and Subscribe by e-mail), Twitter, Tabs for Popular/Recent posts, Featured post section, 3 sections to pull posts from different categories on home page, auto generated thumbnails (for both home and the single entry page), threaded comments, widgetized sidebars and 3 widgetized sections on the bottom. On top of all this, Urbane comes with integrated theme options that let you specify categories to use on the home page, configure your feedburner/twitter settings and much more.

The theme has been tested with Firefox, Internet Explorer 7 and Safari and works without any problems.

Setting up the theme

  • Download and extract the theme. Place it in wp-content/themes section of your WordPress installation.
  • Setup the different categories/theme options on the home page by going to wp-admin -> Appearance -> Urbane Options
  • For the thumbnails, just upload images to your posts (no need to insert them). The scripts will make thumbnails automatically.
  • To enable threaded comments, go to wp-admin -> Settings -> Discussion -> Enable Threaded comments

Demo & Download

and not enough of others resulting in a muffled, unpleasant sound that sees us ripping them out half way through
the first song. In the early days of Metallica, Ulrich became known as
a pioneer of fast thrash drum beats, which he used for nearly
all of the early Metallica songs on the ‘Kill ‘Em All’ album.

Forgot to also mention that that “Calendar” is one UGLY butted thing. If you could also fix that, it looks absolutely terrible and completely not fitting with the Theme. It might be the particular font used, don’t know. FYI.

  33. leeuniverse left a comment on September 8, 2011 at 6:32 pm |

Some serious issues so far…. and a couple of important requests.

    1. The “feature” content, when it displays an image and the text isn’t a HUGE amount, the bottom border of the “box” the image runs over it. In other words, the image doesn’t stay within the post/box. See my site http://www.whatisrightandwrong.com

    2. When posting a “Video” in a post it does not show in the “Feature” areas. Could you please fix or show how this is done?

    3. Could you create the ability with the “Features” where you can “select” what you want featured? In other words, not only have the recent post in a particular category show for each feature, but have all recent posts show in all four features from anywhere (this also is a bug, even selecting the same category for all will not show all recent in that category, only the SAME last post is shown in all 4 features for one category).

Also, could you have another feature selection where we can “sticky” a post, any post we want to one of the Features?

    4. We need to be able to designate for a child page, either static or a post, which side we want the sidebar on. In the meantime, could you show me how to switch the right sidebar to the other side?

    5. Could you explain how to make the three-tabbed recent Widget not as “long”? I want it the same size as the normal sidebar widgets. (Or at least show me where I can go to manipulate it to do what I want?)

These are the problems I’ve noticed on initial install…..
Please if you could fix them ASAP, and/or also tell me how to fix things, that would help us a lot. Thank you for the quality Theme, it just need a little more fixing to work like it should. Please…. It’s a quality enough theme to continue to keep up-to-date.

Although, I’m going to make some of the “text” a little darker (you might want to consider some of the same, so it’s more easy to read, which would make the Theme perfect.)

Thanks again, and please help….. Much gratitude.

I would like to first say what a fantastic theme this is for free at premium quality.Kudos on that!

I wondered if you have tested the theme with ie8? I see there is code included in the header to use the ie stylesheet. Website looks great on ie7 and other browsers but in ie8, my content overlaps my header on individual pages. It is an internal staging server so no use in sharing link, but I am glad to post the code and share screenshots. Thanks for the help!

    Hi there,

Pretty cool theme, thanks so much for making it! I have questions I hope someone will be able to answer. Site link the questions are about is here:

    http://www.rileysplace.org/

    (I’m still tweaking.)

    1) How to get more than 2 posts in the center content section?
    2) How to get the category titles to not stop partially through the title adding the “…” instead of finishing the title in the top and two right category panels?

I think that’s all at least for now.

    Thank you!

I took my blog based on this theme live two days ago. It works brilliantly in Chrome, Firefox and Safari, but in Explorer it’s a complete disaster. The only reason for this I can think of is because I have removed the code for the RSS feed, which I don’t want to use right now. Somehow in IE the RSS icon reappears, but not in the other browsers I mentioned. Has anyone got any idea what’s going on here?

  39. Monica left a comment on November 19, 2010 at 12:39 am |

Thankyou so much for an interesting template!

I’ve worked hard to get it all functioning, still a few things I’m struggling to modify.

MAin issue is the email subscribe. I just can’t get it to work. Feedburner no longer does numerical ID,so I input my feedburner feed name, and have tried a few options, and nothing is working. Says that feed is not available. But it definitely is.

    Any ideas?

    • Monica left a comment on November 19, 2010 at 3:52 am |

The problem seems to be that Urbane Options requests the email feed ID NUMBER. Whereas feedburner now uses the feeds name rather than a number. I’ve googled everywhere to see if I can find the number but no luck.

  40. Lomin Saayman left a comment on November 6, 2010 at 4:10 am |

Appearance > Urbane Options: I am stumped by how to “Choose a category for your featured post”. Where do I select this category from? There’s no drop-down list of categories associated with this question. If I simply type in one of the categories I already created, it doesn’t work. Can someone please help explain this?

    • Lynn left a comment on November 11, 2010 at 12:20 pm |

I got round this by using the category slug rather than the name.

Lynn, I thanked you for your help in an earlier comment, but it was deleted (perhaps because I had made an unflattering remark about Urbane?). I did eventually get round the problem.

I (somehow) successfully built a site on this theme sever months ago and it looked great. Today, however, it’s moving day (to a new server facility) and in the Export / Import process I have lost the images on the front page.

I have tried deleting the posts with pics and re-creating them (attaching the pics to the posts as directed above) and all I get is broken image links.

Any guidance? Please? It’s a beautiful site and I’d hate to lose it over this.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Great, beautiful theme. Thank you very much for providing it for free. I want to start using it on my blog very soon so I have two questions about it:

    1) how can I make the 4 featured posts be my 4 most recent posts (not just the newest post of a certain category)? I have a category called “All posts” if it helps.

    2) how do I exclude posts that appear on the 4 featured posts sections from the recent posts section on front page (right before the footer)? I want to avoid duplicated posts on frontpage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

how do we add a class to navigation bar so that child pages don’t have a same styling as parent pages?
they have a transparent background in the parent pages, does not work for the child page links to have the same…

    thanks!

    Hello Jay ,

You really did a good job by creating this theme. I really love it for real. But there is one thing I want to ask you. Where did we get our Feddburner ID?? a numeric one, because I sign up to feedburner after this site integrate with google and I only got feed name (mine is “ferryprima”). I search for my Feedburner ID but I only get this “k1itnpmmout4ag24ifqel39gb0″ (I got this when I go to my feedburner account and see the address in my browser which shows ” http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/dashboard?id=k1itnpmmout4ag24ifqel39gb0 “.

Could you please help for this one?? Thanks before jay. I would appreciate if you email me the solution to my email I used for comment 🙂

    Thanks You,
    From your satisfied theme user
    Ferry Prima

@Jai:- I think I found the error. It was the way the function to generate thumbnails was being used. Till now, it was only picking up images that are posted as an attachment.

Anyway, I have update the theme. Everything works now guys. Check it 🙂

Yet another gorgeous, clean design. I really, really love this one–some times the focus on content can be weighed down with bells and whistles. Some really great bells and whistles, don’t get me wrong–but I usually want to read content, not try and wade through everything to find it.

I think I’ve found a new favorite of yours! Please keep at it, I love seeing what you do!

    Hi,

really great theme, thanks for sharing it with us 🙂
But I have a small issue with it. When a Post contains only an Image gallery and none or little text, the excerpts all over the page are filled with some kind of background CSS code.
    See what I mean here
    http://cocoblog.net/2009/10/
look for the Post whick begins with text FAIL

Any ideas how to remove this coding from excerpts?

    Thanks

Thanks so much for the theme. I’ve been working on customizing it for my needs and have had one little issue that I can’t seem to fix. On my single post pages, the bottom 3 widgetized boxes hang over my wrapper background. (for example- http://www.scrapquest.com/2009/09/new-site-design-coming-soon/ ) I probably did something that caused this but I can’t figure out what. I don’t know if this would be in the stylesheet or somewhere else. Thanks for any help you can give!

@abietto:- This is a problem with your hosting. Some hosts do not allow caching. So contact your hosting provider and sort it out.

The problem seems to be that the thumb.php script does not write the thumb image in the cache directory, but I don’t know why, since WP is installed in the root directory and the cache is 777 CHMOD… I didn’t change anything else in the setup or anything, and I had issues with other themes that use the same script to create the thumbnails automatically. Can anyone help me, please?…

Hi! I activated your theme on a website I’m working on but I got problems with the thumbs.php script: seems like the thumbnails cannot be created, as you can see clicking on the link to the web page. I already changed the CHMOD of the “cache” directory to 777 and to 755 with no results. Is there anything else I should check, like custom fields or should I remove and re-insert the images or anything like that? Can you help me? Thank you very much! =)

@valmg:- In case you don’t want the single post to contain thumbnail, just remove the lines 10-13 in the single.php file from the theme folder.

Btw, I have added this as an option in the theme options page. You can choose whether you want a thumbnail in the single post or not. So, just download the new version 🙂

The demo look different as in the capture, not so multicolor.
